Zero Carbon Schools
Zero Carbon Schools helps schools change the way they respond to the climate and nature crisis, putting climate education and action at the heart of school life.
Year 4 are taking part in a cross-curricular programme with links to Science, Geography, Maths, English, PSHE and Art. As a result of the programme, Year 4 children will:
- Learn more about climate change and feel empowered to take action in their school community
- Develop leadership, communication, problem solving and teamwork skills
- Calculate an estimate of their school’s carbon emissions
- Lead meaningful projects to reduce the school’s carbon footprint
The programme has four stages:
- Explore – understand the causes and impacts of the climate crisis.
- Investigate – find out how our school activities create carbon emissions.
- Act – design projects that aim to reduce your school’s carbon footprint.
- Inspire – share results within and beyond the school, encouraging others to take action.
As climate change spans all aspects of life, the Zero Carbon Schools Programme takes a cross-curricular approach. It integrates climate education across the curriculum. The programme often provides opportunities for pupils to apply skills, learnt within other lessons, into a new or different context.
